The harshness of the climate in the high valleys of the Jura gave rise to watchmaking activity during the long winters of isolation. "During the 18th century, the efforts of the region’s industrious and ingenious inhabitants gradually led to the establishment of fully-fledged workshops for the design and manufacture of watches, and by 1780 watchmaking had developed into a process involving 30 distinct operations."

With the horological genes of the Jura, in 1862, the two brothers: Joseph and Theodore Schwob created their own watchmaking company, Cyma. With more than 150 years, focusing on avant-garde mechanical production techniques, Cyma has been characterized by merging timeless elegance with contemporary style, a sign of a long watchmaking tradition. Thanks to the technical innovation, Cyma was one of the companies that made Neuchatel the renowned center of the watchmaking industry it is today.

Over the years, Cyma established itself as a pioneer in the manufacture of intricate repeater watches, high complications and chronographs.

By the early 1900's, Cyma daily production was 150 pieces. Around 10 years later, Cyma had risen significantly assembling 2,500 movements daily in the workshops. Cyma did not stop, always open to modernization and technological advance, during the 1920's, the firm had the capacity in its workshops to produce watches on a much larger scale. With 2,000 people employed and assembling 4,000 watches a day, in 1929, Cymas boasted the biggest workshop in Europe.

From the early 1900's onwards, Cyma received numerous awards, first for its prowess in extra-slim watches then, for its invention of a new extra-flat lever movement fitted inside a pocket watch. By 1915, Cyma was already elaborating shock-resistant movements, along with the first waterproof models. By 1929, the company received first prize at the International Barcelona Exposition.

In 1930, Cyma entered in the the ladies' market, one more time, the brand became renowned for its elegance and precision.

The first Cyma automatic watch was introduced in 1943, caliber 420 featuring an unidirectional rotor. Later, the innovation was further and the company introduced a new product, an eight-day mechanical alarm clock with single winding key in 1945. Following by the Sonomatic alarm clock in 1957 and the gold Time-O-Vox alarm clock watch, which received official chronometer certification in 1956.

Today, based in Geneve, "Cyma continues to adhere to the quality standards that were established 150 years ago, remaining true to the spirit of watchmaking perfected over time."

Today, we are presenting an immaculate timepiece, a vintage Cyma wristwatch, dated from the early 1930's. It It is a manual wind watch with Cyma movement reference (caliber) 038, two adjs., 15 jewels, sub second, Swiss made.

It is a 27.4mm square case with fancy lugs design. After 90 years, it still has a very unique silver dial (it seems to be the original) with an art deco style. The dial has luminous Arabic Numerals, bold minute marks and matching hands, luminous as well. The sub dial is located at 6. Also, the dial is signed with the CYMA name .

This watch is coming with a new old stock two-tone (black and white) two-pieces leather strap.

This watch keeps good time and runs very well.

Vintage watches are traditionally smaller than today's watches. Men's watches typically measure between 29-36mm (some larger, some smaller) wide excluding the crown. In the listing details we typically try to do our best to list all pertinent dimensions of a watch. If you don't see it, or we failed to do so, please reach out to us. Women's watches from the 1900s-1970s were also somewhat smaller than today’s offerings in many cases. Please also feel free to ask any questions you have pertaining to size.

We prefer to shoot photographs outside when weather is permitting. However, when we shoot indoors, please be aware that we shoot our photographs inside of lightboxes that are lit with 360 LED bulbs. This indeed magnifies any flaws. Usually, they are much less obvious to the naked eye. Having said that, we never photoshop any of our photography, remove blemishes, etc. We adjust light, when necessary, but what you see is what you are getting, and we take pride in that.
